Then leaving work this evening before I started the car, engine temp was 8 and external temperature was 7. So normal this evening and way off in the morning? WebMay 31, 2011 · Thinking about this, i assume the temp sender has a changing resistance according to the engine temperature, and the gauges are basically ohm meters, and connecting two of them has altered the resistance in the circuit in some way. That's why there's a little oil-can graphic on the gauge. :tsk: OP: The reason it's there is that oil temperature is a better indicator of the conditions inside the engine than the coolant temperature. For these engines an operating temperature of 230-250°F is nothing to worry about in normal conditions.
