Crystalline swelling

WebOct 1, 1997 · Energy barriers stabilize the various phases over a limited range of interlayer ionic composition. These energy barriers cause hysteresis in crystalline swelling, which in turn causes hysteresis in cation exchange. Results are presented for an experiment involving Ba-Mg exchange on a synthetic fiuoro-hectorite. WebWhen NaMnt was cooled from 20 to -268 °C, a crystalline swelling of NaMnt occurred with an increase of 0.03 nm of basal spacing. This work demonstrates that high/low temperature has a remarkable effect on the hydroxyls and the water molecules in NaMnt, which in turn affects its swelling-shrinkage performance.

WebSilicosis is a lung disease caused by inhaling very tiny crystalline particles of silicon dioxide, or silica. If you have it, you’ll have symptoms of coughing, inflammation (swelling) and fibrosis (scarring). Those three symptoms identify a group of diseases called pneumoconioses. These diseases, caused by dust inhalation, are often described ... WebAll calcium montmorillonites expanded in a step-wise manner to a maximum spacing of about 20Å. The experimental techniques also were applied to the swelling properties of soil clays known to be high in montmorillonite. Results suggest that the poor crystallinity of soil montmorillonites is much more apparent at high water contents.
